Prompt

During my 2023 summer Motion Graphics class, our professor gave us an assignment to recreate a title sequence for a film that came out before the 1940s. The example he gave us was from the 1933 film “King Kong”, so we could not use this film. Therefore, the film I chose for this project was the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz”.

Inspiration

To find inspiration for this project, I watched the film’s original title sequence to see how I could create a new title sequence that was inspired by the former.

I also made it a point to take a look at the film’s cast of characters to see what I could do to have their names in the sequence stand out and be unique instead of just listing them in the text.

Concepts

After consideration, I decided to take a few characters and take some of the things/items associated with them and incorporating them into their actor’s respective name. For example, I used the bubble that the Good Witch Glinda travels in to display Glinda’s actress’ name Billie Burke, and I did the same thing for the Wicked Witch of the East, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and so on.

Storyboards

I then started to get a storyboard going after deciding what to do for the actors’ names. The storyboard stretched out to only 3 sheets considering it was only supposed to be 45 seconds long.

Final Product

I made the creative decision to begin the video with a sepia-colored background to resemble how the film looked before Dorothy traveled to Oz, then fade everything to color about halfway in to resemble Dorothy’s arrival. I also found the font used in the original title sequence and used it for this new sequence.

After animating and editing everything together in Adobe After Effects, I completed the video, making sure it reached the 45-second standard.
